Cities contribute ca. 70% of global carbon dioxide emissions and are also vulnerable to climate change impacts. Cities are increasingly acknowledged as relevant spaces for mitigation and adaptation to climate change. Thus, the summer school 2022 aims to provide interdisciplinary training on anthropogenic climate change, focusing on cities, their climate vulnerabilities, mitigation pathways emphasizing short-lived climate forcers (SLCF), and adaptation strategies.
We will consider the challenges and opportunities posed by cities understood as complex systems, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). We will revise the fate of SLCF and precursors from origin to impact, including societal dimensions. Using urban scenarios of South America, we will delve into the challenges associated with mobility, energy choices, urban vulnerabilities, and climate and air quality governance. Hands-on activities will include remote sensing, long-term trend analysis, and data science-based regional interdisciplinary case studies.
