Research:

My research interests cover a broad range of topics, but I am mostly engaged in ecological physiology with strong ties into behavioral ecology, evolutionary ecology and biogeography. In my opinion, an understanding of the processes underlying global ecological and evolutionary patterns can only be achieved by an integration of these disciplines. Hence, physiological mechanisms and tolerances, ecological and evolutionary constraints all contribute, depending on the taxon and scale of study, to the distribution, abundance and success of species and populations. I have long studied the impact of environmental changes on intergative physiology, with the primary goal of determining and assessing the proximate abiotic and biotic factors that might impact the Darwinian fitness. In my opinion, this endeavor is becoming increasingly important due to the accelerating rate of human-induced environmental perturbations.

Objectives:

Study organismic responses to the impact of global change

Integrate aspects of physiology biodiversity management

Use new tools (genomics , molecular biology , toxicology ) to understand and predict the impact of environmental change on biodiversity

Actual research lines:

We investigate (eg, metabolic, thermoregulation, digestive, osmotic, immunological, neuronal) physiological limitations on biodiversity, in order to improve the ability to predict responses of organisms to environmental perturbations, such as climate change, disease and habitat loss. In our opinion, by understanding the underlying mechanistic basis of the capabilities of the body to respond to biotic and abiotic environment, a solid foundation can be built to develop predictions about the likelihood of success or failure of individuals, populations and species (including invasive species and crops or human beings) to deal with the global changes that are coming. As integrative biologist, working with invertebrates (eg piriwinkles, mussels, insects and woodlices) and vertebrates (eg fish, amphibians, lizards, birds and mammals).

Projections and challenges:

Deliver explanations and transfer knowledge to society and proposals on the impacts and responses of organisms to environmental changes
